Carbon Offsetting
Carbon offsetting, whilst important, should be a last resort, carbon reduction being the primary aim for anyone trying to improve their environment. Carbon offsetting and trading encourages individuals and businesses to offset their carbon footprint by various means. Normally offsetting helps fund schemes which help others in the global community lower their carbon footprint or help environmental projects that remove carbon from our atmosphere or keep it locked in forests.
Kaieteur offer many ways to offset your carbon footprint, primarily we use tree planting. We work along the calculations that every ton of carbon produced in your footprint, should equates to one tree being planted.
Given that an average mature tree may weigh 50 tons, 25 tons may be water, leaving 25 tons, of which 12.5tons may be carbon. We take into account that some trees don’t make it to maturity, and so equate that 1 ton of carbon is equal to one tree.
You will soon be able to calculate your Carbon Footprint with Kaieteur online and then purchase carbon credits from Kaieteur to offset. The money from these carbon credits goes into our tree planting fund and is used to plant trees locally, nationally and internationally. It is important to note that trees planted through kaieteur, with external groups and charities are given every chance to reach maturity. In many cases they are planted on land owned by these charities so that they may be protected through to maturity, with no intention of using them as a timber crop.
