One Planet Living by Pooran Desai and Paul King
Written by Pooran Desai and Paul King
Foreword by Kevin McCloud
Globally, we are consuming resources at a faster rate than the planet can replenish them, causing problems such as disappearing forests, declining fisheries and climate change. People in developed countries need to find ways of reducing their ecological footprint, while developing countries need to continue enabling growth, but in a sustainable way, that has the advantage of avoiding the problems now being experienced in the developed world. One Planet Living tries to provide solutions that are attractive and affordable to a diverse range of peoples and cultures. It aims to address key human needs such as housing, clothing, food, healthcare, education, energy, transport and leisure.
One Planet Living is a joint initiative between environmental organisations BioRegional and the World Wildlife Fund, working with local people, companies and governments around the world to create sustainable One Planet Living communities. One Planet Living is about the choices we face if we are to enjoy a high quality of life within the resources of our planet. It is estimated that if everyone in the world consumed as much of the planet's resources as the average UK citizen, we would need three planets to support us. Based on 10 guiding principles which address key human needs, this little book suggests easy, ingenious and affordable ways in which we can lessen our impact on the planet and on other people
