The Ginkgo tree can be traced back to the age of the dinosaurs 230 million years ago. Using fossil records they have been dated back to the Jurassic period and in fact further back to Permian period when all earths land masses are thought to have been joined which is 270 million years ago. Because of its distant heritage it is also called the living fossil tree.

The Ginkgo tree also referred to as The Maidenhair Tree is a beautiful looking tree with a unique type of leaf. It is a strong and resilient tree, being able to fend off insects, bacteria, fungi and human pollution very well.

The Ginkgo looks amazing in the autumn, giving a splash of yellows to please the eye.

It is famous for surviving the devastating effects after the nuclear bomb was dropped on Hiroshima by the Americans. A ginkgo is also said to have survived the Chernobyl nuclear disaster.
The Ginkgo has a wealth of medicinal properties, with ointments and pills being freely available from most health food stores. In particular it can help the circulation of the blood and the human brain, especially memory.
The Ginkgo Tree is also used medicinally in the treatment of Reynaud’s Disease, Chilblains, Senile Dementia and Tinnitus
